Arts court, the city’s municipal arts centre, is a multidisciplinary venue for theatre and dance as well as the visual arts. Here you’ll find the jewel of Canadian galleries, the National Gallery of Canada. Celebrating 125 years as the showcase of Canadian treasures, the gallery has over 1,200 works from its permanent collection on view. Besides exhibiting the best of Canadian art both present and past, the National Gallery also offers European and American galleries with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the present. Outside the permanent collection, the Gallery also offers special exhibits of art collected from around the world, currently including the Ottawa Renoir Exhibit.
Other smaller galleries around the city also have not-to-be missed exhibits. Also in the Arts Court is the Ottawa Art Gallery, the city’s municipal art space. The Ottawa gallery presents changing exhibitions of regional, national, and international artists, plus pieces from the Firestone Collection. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography displays pieces from its collection of over 160,000 photographic works. Art enthusiasts with an eye for buying shouldn’t miss the galleries of the Byward Market in central downtown. The yearly Ottawa Art Festival also gives collectors a chance to acquire unique Canadian art pieces; the largest festival of its kind in Eastern Ontario, the festival offers 120 artists all under one roof.
