The old Carleton County Jail is said to be one of Canada's most haunted buildings. Opened in 1862, it was a maximum security holding facility for over 100 years. The jail remained in operation right up until 1972 when it was closed due to poor and unsanitary conditions. It immediately reopened as a hostel one year later and since then, countless people staying at the hostel have had very strange and unexplainable experiences.
The Chateau Laurier was the dream of Charles Melville Hays, who commissioned the Chateau to be the first in his plan of establishing a chain of opulent hotels across Canada. Hays died aboard the Titanic just 12 days before the opening ceremony of the Chateau on April 26, 1912. The belief is that, tied to this world by the unfulfilled desire to see his dream come true, his spirit stays on in the hotel which was his last and greatest achievement.
Built in 1827, the building that now houses the Bytown Museum was the treasury and storefront during the construction of the Rideau Canal. Rumor has it that the assistant commissary General Duncan Mcnab ran the building just the way he liked to; now almost over 200 years later some folks say that Duncan’sghost is still running the Bytown Museum.
